Gull Rock from Tintagel Painting
I was out on the Tintagel cliffs today in North Cornwall, and with the fearsome winds and the mizzle, mist and rain, it looked exactly like this. Except that there seemed to be some excitement going on with this pair …
Shame I didn’t have time to draw them. Maybe next time.
Bude Beach Winter Painting – In Progress (Acrylic, 60x20cm)
I was talking here about painting a series of pictures this year, every week, of the same subject, and seeing how the light and season changes the scene. And I’ve hit upon my subject! It’s always hard to choose just one because so many ideas come to me. But I’ve chosen Bude beach – I love the wonderful sense of sky and space in this view, which to me just encapsulates what I love about Bude.
And the series will tie in with my solo exhbition there in October. I hope to be able to show these quicker studies alongside the larger paintings.
I was thinking of working further on this one, but I kind of like it as it is. Wonder what you think? More work, or move on to the next one?
The weather has been wonderful, and it’s been so lovely to be out walking in the sun again. Here are some photos from my walk, including one with the sheep living on the edge – literally!
Not quite warm enough for me to sketch outside. but it’s coming. Can feel spring in the air. The daffodils are emerging, & soon the little lambs will too. Can’t wait!
The Coast Path – wonderful shadows. Only noticed them when I uploaded the photo.
It looked pretty much like this today. A little sketch showing the harbour mouth, with the fabulous slate rock. I love the colours when it rains – they have a depth and translucence to them. Hoping for some sunshine over the weekend, though.
Hope you have a good one.
It’s been a slow week for painting – I went off for a mini-break to South Cornwall with my lovely man, and after that the week just vanished. So here’s one from the archive (as they say!) – still one of my favourites. The painting was done entirely with a palette knife – I’ll try that again, as I really like the texture and the freedom it gives. And a nice reminder of summer, which we need on a day like today, when it’s wind and gales here.
Hope you’re having a good weekend.

Windswept Tree – Sketchbook Drawing
The weather’s been good again here this week, so I did this little sketch outside, on the cliffs. I wanted to capture the way the wind blows the tree, and the strong shadows and colours – the wondrous blues, golds and russets at this time of year.
Hope you have a good weekend, notwithstanding …
